Island Players Board of Directors announce the return of scholarships with four $2,000 awards available!

Island Players is pleased to announce that, as part of our community outreach and mission to encourage young adults to pursue their interest in the Arts, we are once again offering scholarships.

Four $2000 scholarships are available to high school graduating seniors in Manatee County who are pursuing higher education in the Arts (dance, music, theater, etc.)

Scholarship application packages have been emailed to the appropriate departments at each high school. Completed applications must be returned to Island Players no later than Friday, April 15, 2022.

The Island Players Board of Directors is excited to be able to continue our commitment to young adults in our community.

Island Players fifth production of their 73rd Season is the hilarious whodunit “The Psychic,” written by Sam Bobrick, directed by James Thaggard, and stage-managed by Denise Handley. The upcoming comedy runs May 5-15, 2022 with shows Tues – Sat at 7:30 PM and Matinees at 2:00 PM. Island Players expresses their gratitude to Ginny’s & Jane E’s for Co-Producing.

Bobrick wrote for numerous television shows such as The Andy Griffith Show, Bewitched, and Get Smart. Bobrick was also the author of more than 40 plays including the screwball comedy “Baggage,” which Thaggard directed at Island Players in 2018 to rave reviews.

Thaggard marks his 20th production as an Island Players director with “The Psychic,” winner of the Mystery Writers of America’s 2011 “Edgar” Award for Best Play. The mystery-comedy follows Adam Webster, who hangs a sign in his window offering discount Psychic Readings. Much to his surprise, the unemployed writer finds himself involved in a string of increasingly bizarre murders.

The cast includes newcomers William Ashburn as Adam and Michael Sacco as Johnny Bubbles. Also featured are Island Players regulars Mark Shoemaker as Detective Coslow and three “Baggage” alumni, Jennifer Kwiatkowski as Laura Benson, Rick Kopp as Roy Benson, and Jennifer Caldwell as Rita Malone.

Tickets are $25 each and will be available once the Box Office opens on Monday, April 25th. Thereafter, the Box Office will be open Monday – Saturday, 9-1 and one hour before each show. For more information, please see the website, www.theislandplayers.org or you call the Box Office at 941 778-5755 during office hours. The theater is located at 10009 Gulf Drive, Anna Maria.

Masks are voluntary. Hand sanitizer will be available. Additional parking is available at CrossPointe Church, 8605 Gulf Drive. The AMI free trolley stops in front of the church and runs approximately every 20 minutes north toward the theater. Please allow extra time to find parking especially for the Sunday Matinees.

“The Psychic” is all-around hilarious. You won’t want to miss it!
